“Yingelishi” 吟歌丽诗 is a new opera inspired by the original interlanguage libretto by Jonathan Stalling staged at Yunnan University in 2010 and later published as a book of poetry by the same name (Counterpath Press, 2011). In this new version, composer Yan Yiguo has woven other verse from Stalling's work into the original libretto to create a story that spans the spirit and human realms--a story of two languages falling so deeply in love with one another that the walls between them, between the self and other, between him and her, between us and them, between East and West unravel into a single shared space between. On this occasion, Opera 180 in partnership with the Edgar Snow Memorial Foundation and Symposium, the Diastole Scholars Center and the "Poetics of Invention" exhibition at the Miller-Nichols library at UMKC, the audience will hear the prologue only, but in the full Opera, the language spirits take human form to seek one another in the modern world. As the Chinese spirit takes human form, it travels to America seeking English's love by singing English written and sung through Chinese characters. Meanwhile the English spirit takes human form to seek the love of Chinese by transforming English into classical Chinese poetry. After trials and tribulations, they find one another in the space between--“as the dreamers and the dreamed.”
